My favorite
novel is The Perks of Being a Wallflower
written by Stephen Chbosky. It’s a coming of age story, a teenage romantic
drama and it’s written in a epistolary way. The story takes place in the United
States and settled in the eighties.
The book is
about Charlie, a fifteen year old boy; he is introverted, shy and intelligent.
He also suffers from depression and anxiety. His best friend recently killed
himself and he feels alone. Charlie is starting his freshman year in high
school with fear because he has no friends but, then he meets Patrick and his
step sister Sam, who are seniors. He enters their group of friends and they show
him a new way of living which helps Charlie understand what growing up and
being an adult means. Since this moment, Charlie enters the teenage world of
love, drugs, sex, family dramas, new friends and more everyday problems that he
has to deal with. During the entire
story, Charlie writes letters to an unknown friend about how he feels and what’s
going on with his life.
I find this
novel very interesting because you read the story from Charlie’s letters point
of view and get to know how he feels about. It’s a dramatic story but it also
has beautiful moments about adolescence and you empathize with Charlie’s
situation.
